Private Clifford Moiser

MM, 36247, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

Clifford Moiser was born in Ossett on the 8th August 1898 and was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Ossett on the 11th September 1898. He was the second child and youngest son of three children born to Herbert Moiser and his wife Kate (nee Lunn) who married in late 1891.

In 1901, the Moiser family were living at Dearden Street, Ossett, but had moved by 1911 to live at 28 Wesley Street, Ossett. Herbert Moiser was working as a carrier for a mungo manufacturer and Clifford, now 12 years old, was still at school.

Clifford’s army service record has not survived but his medal card indicates that his rank was Private and his service number was 36247. He was awarded the British and Victory medals, but not the 1914/15 Star, indicating that he did not serve overseas before 31st December 1915. In common with many, his medal card does not record the award of the Military medal for gallantry. He was demobilised on the 3rd March 1919 and allocated to “Z” Reserve.

On the 5th August 1931, Clifford Moiser, son of Herbert Moiser (deceased) married 29 year-old local spinster Amy Smith at White Chapel Parish Church, Cleckheaton. Clifford’s address was 32 Moorcroft Road, Bradford and his given occupation was a fruiterer. His mother Kate was a witness at the marriage. The couple do not appear to have had any children.

Clifford Moiser died in the Wirral area in Summer 1964 aged 66 years.

The local press had this report of Clifford Moiser’s Military Medal award:

“Another Ossett Soldier Gains Military Medal – Private Clifford Moiser (20), K.O.Y.L.I., son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Moiser, of Westleigh, Westfield-street, Headlands, Ossett, has been awarded the Military Medal for meritorious conduct on the battlefield by carrying important messages under heavy shell fire. The soldier who is associated with the Wesley-street, Wesleyan Sunday School, has served on the Western front for over a year.” 1
