Marjorie or Marjory Robbins

VAD Kitchen work.

Little is known of Marjorie Robbins except that her VAD card indicates that her address in Ossett was “The Headlands” and that hitherto she had lived in Cardiff. It is likely that Marjorie was born in Cardiff, Glamorgan in 1897 the youngest of four children born to commercial traveller Arthur John Robbins and his wife Clara nee Fifoot(born 1863) who had married in 1886.In 1901 and 1911 the family were living on Diana Street Cardiff and it seems that Marjorie may also have been known as Agnes Margaret Robbins.

There is no evidence of a family named Robbins in Ossett around that time and no evidence either of local VAD work. In any event Marjorie Robbins was engaged as a VAD nurse with kitchen duties in June 1917 until April 1918 but her only commission appears to have been St. Pierre Red Cross Hospital Newport Road, Cardiff.

And that’s that…..except for this. On 31st March 1920 Clara Robbins aged 57 years and Agnes. M. Robbins, aged 23, left Liverpool aboard the White Star Line ship, The Baltic, bound for New York, USA. The ship’s log recorded that Clara and Agnes Margaret (aka Marjorie) Robbins’ address was Ossett and they were seen off at Liverpool by Arthur John Robbins. The ship’s log also indicates that mother and daughter’s intentions were to make the USA their permanent place of residency.
