C/SR 8136, HMS “Pembroke”, Royal Navy Special Reserve
James Leo Judge was born in Ossett on the 7th July 1918, the son of Michael Judge and Maria Erly, who married in early 1910. By 1911 the couple were living at 4, Clarendon Cottages adjacent to South Ossett Christ Church. James, a labourer at a wagon works and Maria, a cloth sorter for a rag merchant were both born in Ossett. The couple had at least eight children, including a son also named James Leo Judge, who was born and died in early 1915. Michael Judge died in Ossett in 1927, aged 47 years and by 1939 his widow, Maria,was living at 26, Albert Street, Ossett. She died in late 1948, aged 65 years.
James Leo Judge married Adelaide Roebuck of Horbury in the spring of 1943. Adelaide was born in 1921 the daughter of Joe Roebuck and Annie F. Ellerker who married in the Dewsbury area in late 1920. James Leo and Adelaide appear not to have had children.

James Judge served during WW2 in the Royal Navy Special Reserve at HMS Pembroke, which was the Royal Navy barracks at Chatham, Kent between 1940 and 1957.
On the 5th November 1946 James, aged 28 years, died from tuberculosis at the Military Sanitorium, Ilkley. He is buried at Horbury Cemetery at Grave 364, Section C. and his grave bears the inscription “Rest in Peace, Beloved Your Duty Nobly Done Gone Where We Who Love You Will Meet One By One”.1
At the time of his death his address was Dovecote House, Dovecote Lane, Horbury. Administration of his estate was granted to his widow, Adelaide Judge.
